November 2025 Furniture Bank Newsletter

A Season of Gratitude
Dear Friends and Supporters,
This time of year inspires gratitude. We often pause to count our blessings—but it’s also worth noticing what we take for granted.
- Did you wake up in a warm bed?
- With a roof over your head?
- Food in the pantry?
- A car to drive? Gas in the tank?
- Family?
- Friends?
If you answered “yes,” you already have more than many families in our community.
At the Furniture Bank of Metro Detroit, we meet parents every day who are working to rebuild their lives. Yet their children still sleep on the floor, on the couch, or share a single bed. This holiday season, you can help write a happy bedtime story.
This month, we’re launching the 1,000 Beds Challenge—our effort to provide 1,000 local children with a good night’s sleep in a bed of their own. While toys bring smiles, a bed brings something far more lasting: comfort, safety, and the foundation for dreams.
As you count your blessings this Thanksgiving, make a difference by taking the 1,000 Beds Challenge!

Diane Charles,
President & CEO

Tonight, 20,000 Metro Detroit children will go to sleep without a bed.
It’s called bed poverty: a hidden crisis affecting families rebuilding after homelessness, domestic violence, fire, flood, or financial hardship. Their options: sleep with a family member, on the sofa, or on the cold, hard floor. Every child matters and deserves the dignity of a safe, warm bed of their own.
Our Goal
To purchase 1,000 twin mattresses, foundations, pillows, and bedding between November 1 – December 31, 2025.
A Veteran’s Destiny
At just 23, Destiny Pinkston is a U.S. Navy veteran who served as a personnel specialist, assisting sailors with pay, transfers, and separations. She moved frequently and never truly put down roots.
A year ago, she returned to Detroit with little more than a bag and stayed with her aunt while planning her next steps. Thanks to the GI Bill, she is now pursuing a communications degree at Wayne State University.

Recently, through Volunteers of America, Destiny moved into her first real home—but it was empty. No sofa, no bed, no place to eat or study.
The Furniture Bank stepped in, providing:
sofa
dresser
lamp
dining table
dishes
and more
Everything needed to turn an empty apartment into a home.
“I feel complete,” Destiny says. “I have everything I need. I love the Furniture Bank, and I encourage anyone who has extra to donate. Anyone who needs help should use the Furniture Bank as a resource.”
Thanks to the support of donors, Destiny finally has a home she can call her own.
