Bed Poverty
A Bed for Every Head
Approximately 20,000 children lack a dedicated place to sleep
In Wayne, Macomb and Oakland counties...
This issue, known as bed poverty, means many children are without a comfortable, safe place to rest.
The Furniture Bank of Metro Detroit has set an ambitious goal for 2025: to provide every child a bed for every head. We believe that every child deserves a place to rest, dream, and grow.
For a $150 donation, we can provide a brand-new mattress, foundation, pillow, and bedding.
- Families who can’t afford to replace broken beds or damaged bedding
- Parents or caregivers who share beds and bedrooms with their children
- Children who end up sleeping on the floor
- Struggles in school
- Weaker immune systems
- Decreased focus
- Emotional problems
- Increased levels of depression and anxiety
- Fewer or weaker relationships
Free Community Area
The Community Pickup Area at the Furniture Bank of Metro Detroit offers free furniture to anyone in need. This section includes items that may be too large, too old, or otherwise unsuitable for our regular distribution programs but are still usable.
The furniture is available on a first-come, first-served basis, providing an opportunity for individuals and families to find essential items at no cost. By giving these items a second life, we reduce waste and extend help to more members of our community.
To get furniture from the Furniture for Families program, please see the details and requirements.
