Furniture Bank helps 4,000 families in 2009

Robert Boyle named Executive Director

Furniture Bank, Target and United Way team up to get Pontiac family a tree for the Holidays

The Holidays were truly "Happy" for Katoree and her son Tra'vion. Through the generosity of Target in Bloomfield Hills they received a beautifully decorated Christmas tree for their home.  Working in conjunction with United Way for Southeastern Michigan, Furniture Bank obtained and delivered the tree, helping Katoree and Tra'vion make their house a home for the Holidays.

"We didn't have a tree to put gifts under,"

says Katoree.  "It arrived just in time for Christmas and really made the Holiday special for us.  Tra'vion's face lit up just like the tree."

Thank you Bloomfield Hills Target and United Way for helping brighten up a local family's Holiday!
In November, Furniture Bank of Southeastern Michigan named Robert Boyle to be the organization's executive director.  He joins the Furniture Bank with a unique background that includes nonprofit development and communications, as well as prior experience in sales, broadcasting and commercial real estate.

Before joining Furniture Bank, Rob was the Director of Development and Communications at the Greater Detroit Agency for the Blind and Visually Impaired.  He has previously worked at United Way for Southeastern Michigan, including a year with the Nonprofit Facilities Center, a United Way collaboration with the Nonprofit Finance Fund that helped nonprofit organizations
plan and fund capital projects.

Before working in the nonprofit sector, Rob was Director of Business Development with the Bieri Company, a locally-based national real estate consulting firm.  He has also been a news contributor and on-air host at metro Detroit's National Public Radio affiliate, WDET-FM.

Despite a difficult economic climate, Furniture Bank of Southeastern Michigan helped 4,000 families to establish a stable home.  Last year, we provided these families with…

  • 2300 mattresses
  • 2600 tables
  • 200 sofas
  • 500 appliances

We also distributed more than 200 cribs to local
families at risk, insuring that more newborns and infants are sleeping safely at night.

In total, almost 16,000 items at a value of almost $1 million were given to local families in Oakland and Macomb counties.

This means that more families have tables to gather around for a meal, more babies will get a healthy start in life and more children can get a good night's rest before taking the final exam.

On behalf of the 4,000 families we serve, Furniture Bank thanks everyone who donated furniture or money in support of our mission last year.  We couldn't do it without your help.
We are pleased to present the second edition of our online newsletter, The Monthly Deposit. We hope that it will give you a better idea of what we do and who we help.

Our mission is to improve lives in Oakland and Macomb counties by collecting gently used furniture and appliances and giving them to families in need.  This has an immediate, positive impact and provides part of the basic foundation on which a successful life can be built.

We encourage your thoughts, feedback and story ideas.  Please let us know what you think at friends@furniture-bank.org.
